Images from the UK Armed Forces community to reflect family life today

Is your family part of the UK Armed Forces community? We would love to hear from you!

Welcome to Real Stories, an online gallery of images submitted by military-connected families reflecting family life today. We hope this virtual art gallery will be educational and informative, and will help raise awareness and understanding of what life is like for the Armed Forces community. Real Stories provides the opportunity to view your experiences through your own lens, and presented in a way of your choosing.

We are inviting members of the UK Armed Forces community (anybody who is related or in a partnership with somebody who is serving or has served in the Armed Forces) to submit an image to show what it is like for military-connected families today.

We welcome contributions from serving and ex-serving families. Please note: contributors must be 18 years or over. However, adults can submit entries on behalf of children under the age of 18 years.

How to submit

Don't worry if your question is not answered here, you can always get in touch to ask us your question!

What we're looking for...

Your family must be part of the UK Armed Forces community. This means anybody who is related to, or in a relationship with somebody who is serving or has served in the UK Armed Forces, including serving and ex-serving personnel themselves and their:

  • Spouse / partner
  • Children
  • Parents
  • Siblings
  • Grandparents
  • Aunts & uncles
  • Wider family members (e.g. cousins)

Submit a digital image (JPEG or PNG format) that reflects what life is like for you today and, if you would like to, include a written contribution to go alongside your submission about what the image represents or means to you, which will be presented in our Reflections booklet (these comments can remain anonymous if you wish). Images need to be family friendly as the gallery will be viewed by all ages. Please note: contributors must be 18 years or over. However, adults can submit entries on behalf of children under the age of 18 years.

Where will they be posted?

The submitted entries will be presented in an online gallery and displayed here. A selection of Real Stories images will be on display at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Stanford Hall. All images will be on display as a slideshow at the next annual King’s Centre for Military Health Research Veterans’ Mental Health conference, London, as well as presented in study reports and related materials, such as military family newsletters.

The project team reserve the right to select which submitted images are on display.

We would love to hear from you!

During the submission process you will have the opportunity to express interest for participating in a voluntary Military Families Research Advisory Group and join a mailing list to hear about future research projects on military and military families.
