Welcome to Real Stories, an online gallery of images submitted by military-connected families reflecting family life today. We hope this virtual art gallery will be educational and informative, and will help raise awareness and understanding of what life is like for the Armed Forces community. Real Stories provides the opportunity to view your experiences through your own lens, and presented in a way of your choosing.
We are inviting members of the UK Armed Forces community (anybody who is related or in a partnership with somebody who is serving or has served in the Armed Forces) to submit an image to show what it is like for military-connected families today.
We welcome contributions from serving and ex-serving families. Please note: contributors must be 18 years or over. However, adults can submit entries on behalf of children under the age of 18 years.
Your family must be part of the UK Armed Forces community. This means anybody who is related to, or in a relationship with somebody who is serving or has served in the UK Armed Forces, including serving and ex-serving personnel themselves and their:
Submit a digital image (JPEG or PNG format) that reflects what life is like for you today and, if you would like to, include a written contribution to go alongside your submission about what the image represents or means to you, which will be presented in our Reflections booklet (these comments can remain anonymous if you wish). Images need to be family friendly as the gallery will be viewed by all ages. Please note: contributors must be 18 years or over. However, adults can submit entries on behalf of children under the age of 18 years.
The submitted entries will be presented in an online gallery and displayed here. A selection of Real Stories images will be on display at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Stanford Hall. All images will be on display as a slideshow at the next annual King’s Centre for Military Health Research Veterans’ Mental Health conference, London, as well as presented in study reports and related materials, such as military family newsletters.
The project team reserve the right to select which submitted images are on display.
During the submission process you will have the opportunity to express interest for participating in a voluntary Military Families Research Advisory Group and join a mailing list to hear about future research projects on military and military families.
By submitting your entry, you confirm that your entry is your own original work, is not defamatory and does not infringe any UK laws or third party rights, and that there are no conflicting agreements in place that restrict usage of your entry. You also confirm that you are the sole owner of the copyright in the entry and you have followed the guidelines regarding images from the Armed Forces (you can find guidance here).
By submitting your entry you confirm that you have full permission from anybody who features in the image. If the photograph includes a minor (person under the age of 18) you also confirm you have permission from their parent or legal guardian to submit the entry.
In accordance with the GDPR and Data Protection Act, all personal data included in the submission (such as email address and contact details) will be held securely and only accessed by the project team.
